Thoughts & Happenings 04/22/17

Know what I’m tired of talking about and thinking about? Pregnancy, miscarriage, ultrasounds, hCG, and basically just everything related to my reproductive system! lol Wow, enough, right? So, all I’m going to say today is that I’m now cramping (to be expected after the d&c) and bleeding (again, normal). I have my post-op appointment on Tuesday when I should know something about the pathology report (if it was molar or an incomplete miscarriage).

Okay, now for some thoughts and happenings NOT related to any of the topics mentioned above. :)

So, I’ve been spending some time on cosmetics lately. I’m really interested in learning how to better apply makeup, truly understand which products do what, and feel more attractive and confident. I used to think that women who looked amazing in makeup were just naturally beautiful, but it’s actually that they (or their makeup artist) are really skilled – it really is an art! That’s not to say that makeup-free can’t be beautiful, because it certainly is, it’s just that when I wear makeup, I want confidence. :D

I signed up for Ipsy this week and I’ll be getting the May GlamBag in the mail in a few weeks. I’m excited! Subscriptions are so fun. And this one is only $10 including shipping (no tax); it’s a bag and five beauty samples. I like that Ipsy provided a survey to get to know me when I signed up so that things will be tailored to me, as much as possible, in my GlamBag.

I bought e.l.f.’s contour pallet yesterday and thanks to amazon’s prime shipping, it will be here tomorrow! I have their blush pallet, which I love but only use one color from. I’m definitely looking forward to learning and beginning contouring. I have sort of chubby cheeks (or, at least a rounded face), so I can use some contouring! lol Do you contour?

Well, we have had to put an end to co-sleeping here. :( I’ve been sidecar co-sleeping with Elizabeth since December, but now she literally crawls away when she wakes up! She has fallen off the bed twice and that was two times too many! Poor thing. So, the mattress on her crib is now at its lowest setting and the side has been put back on. Her bed is still right next to mine, but you know, it’s different than lying next to your baby. I miss it, but we don’t have to worry about her falling, and of course that’s more important. And speaking of sleeping, she is back to LOVING tummy sleeping! I had only been allowing it for naps, but once she started crawling full-on, I felt it was safe for her to sleep that way all night because she can get in and out of all positions with ease. Man, she sleeps so much deeper and longer on her tummy! She went from waking every hour or two to every four or five. ^_^ Do your kids tummy sleep?

So, are you into cosmetics? What have you bought or tried recently? Who do you watch on YouTube for inspiration? Any beauty bag/box subscriptions? Please share!

  1. I haven’t tried a beauty subscription before. That sounds fun! And a good price, too. You definitely have to share with us about your first box/bag so we can see what you get!

The biggest thing I’ve tried lately is liquid eyeliner, and I have to say–I LOVE it! I was afraid of it before and thought it would be hard–something only “those girls” who did glamorous make-up with wings on the edges can do. I was using a crayon-type roll up eyeliner (kind of like the e.l.f. one you posted about the other day). I really liked it and thought that would be the only eye liner I’d ever be able to use. It was so much easier than pencil and looked way better. BUT then a friend of mine did a blog post about using liquid eye liner and it gave me the courage to try. I followed her tutorial and I ended up LOVING it! It’s not hard to apply at all if you just do the method my friend suggested, and it washes off very easily with water–way easier than my previous eye liners had. So if I mess up it’s quick and easy to start over, or even to just wash off the part that is messed up! It’s my new favorite! :)

    1. That’s awesome, learning how to use a product (and loving the result) feels so good!! Do you mind sharing your friend’s blog with me?
I’ll definitely be doing a review of my Ipsy bag. :D

  2. Little Miss Minion always slept better on her stomach in the NICU, but of course once she came, it was ‘back to sleep.’ Once she could roll herself over really well, she’d put herself on her stomach as soon as we laid her down.

    1. I think they just feel more secure because it cuts down on the startle reflex, you know? I was a tummy sleeper as a baby and then all the way until I was like five or six years old. “Back to Sleep” drives me crazy, although I understand the reason and need – still, so frustrating!

  3. That’s awesome about the cosmetics – I agree that it’s important to gain confidence in applying makeup. And I think for moms it’s especially important to have spend time on ourselves. :)

I never let my oldest sleep on her stomach, but after about a month I got the go-ahead from my pediatrician to put my youngest on her stomach. She’d been sleeping in her carseat (not strapped in) for the first month, which worked for her because she absolutely would not sleep on her back. She has always been a FANTASTIC tummy sleeper – long stretches always and has been sleeping through the night since she was 2.5m. My ped said we had very low risk factors, so was ok (of course I worried every night until she was about 5m). So she has screamed every time we tried putting her on her back until about 3w ago (she’s 15m now) when she up and decided she wants to nap on her back but sleep on her tummy at night. So weird. Coincidentally her napping has gone downhill accordingly. Anyway, I am all about tummy sleeping and agree with some updated research that pinpoints to SIDS risks more closely to things like smoking.

    1. It’s so interesting how different babies’ sleeping needs and habits are! My second child had to sleep in the baby swing for the first part of every night for about three months.
The thing about recommendations is that they’re always changing!! Could drive a parent mad… You have to just do what works (and is safe/best) for each child. ^_^

  4. Can I just say something? I find it so awesome that you are trying to learn about makeup and taking care of yourself. Most wives and moms let themselves go a little. I really admire you, Valerie!! In the topic of cosmetics, I love them. I should watch some YouTube videos as well, since I only know the basics. Do you have a channel to recommend? xx

  5. I only rarely use eyeliner, I’ve never done anything with my eyebrows. (Except plucking a few stay hairs) The eyeliner I use was from Avon, and is the twist up kind. I love the twist pencil though.

As far as putting baby on back or belly my kids sleep on their belly. I tried to put the youngest to sleep on his back, but he just screams. My husband made the decision to stop putting him down on his back and he falls asleep so much easier now. I really don’t think he ever fell asleep on his back. Early on he just slept on my chest, so that was basically on his belly. 😉 I never worried too much about sids. I mostly worried about whether any of us would get any rest.

    1. I have yet to figure out how to use eye liner in a complementary way – it never looks natural! :P
Yeah, I think most babies are happier on their bellies (for sleep anyway, a lot of them hate tummy time).
“I never worried too much about sids. I mostly worried about whether any of us would get any rest.” – I hear that!

  6. I stick to the basics, mascara, foundation, and 1 eye shadow at a time. The daughter has shown me different ways to apply multi colors of eye shadow many times but I can’t be bothered. :)

    1. Haha, at least you can wear eye shadow! My eyes protest when I put anything powdery near them. :( I’ve been looking into cream shadows and they’re not quite as irritant but still not discomfort-free.

  7. I first became makeup obsessed when I worked at a department store! My women’s shoe dept was across the aisle from the make up counters and the people over there taught me! I could use some practice and that was the best thing I learned on the job 😂
Omg baby Elizabeth is so cute! I guess I never asked how I slept as a baby so I don’t know! I do know that I was a good baby and never cried though. Even when I woke up I just waited for my mom to wake up instead of alerting her 😂

    1. Oh, you’re so lucky!! I would love to learn in that kind of situation (I bet they also didn’t pressure you to buy since you worked there, right?)
Hehe, thanks, we’re smitten with her! :D
      LOL, wow quiet baby!

      1. They really didn’t! I mean, I bought tons of stuff anyway because I ended up loving the products but they didn’t make me feel obligated at all.
Hahaha I can see why. She seems like a great baby! Hopefully she doesn’t learn to climb out of her crib too quickly!

  8. I loved Boxy Charm the best , it’s a bit more expensive but it was several full size , good quality products . I miss it !

If you do Face Book at all, the “beauty at home” w krystin cole is the best make up group . They talk about all brands and really help a gal out with questions or tutorials . :-)

    1. Thanks 😊 I am debating about doing boxy charm… I’m wondering if I wouldn’t rather enjoy having two cheaper subs come each month than just the one. :/ Still haven’t decided yet.
I’m actually not on FB, but thank you! 💕

  9. I am utterly useless at make-up… I throw on some foundation and mascara daily and just hope for the best. I probably should put some effort into learning how to do it properly but I am not sure if I am willing to get up any earlier. Ha ha!

Little O mostly sleeps on his side but he is soooo restless. Unless we co-sleep he doesn’t really sleep but at the moment he’s waking up a lot… I am tired…

    1. “and just hope for the best” – lol! This is usually me, too, but something has recently hit and I feel all excited about makeup the way I did as a pre-teen!! 😍
I’m sorry about the frequent wake ups, it’s rough. Our nights definitely vary here, and I am tired much of time, lol.

  10. Awww look at little Elizabeth. To be that content lol. I would offer help with the make up but I have never worn it. I don’t know why. My mom and sister are all dolled up all the time, the whole nine yards but I never did. You will figure it out though. With all you schedule and get done in a day, all you figured out with your family, school, meals, outtings, I know if anyone can figure it out, it is you :) God Bless you :)

    1. Haha, I can be content while sleeping, too – it just doesn’t happen very often anymore!! ;)
Aww, thank you! I am happy that there is so much information online, it should make it fairly easy to learn. :)
