Learning Makeup // Part One

I have always loved the idea of makeup but I’ve only ever been comfortable wearing a few things because I didn’t know enough about the others (eye shadow, bronzer, etc.) to wear them with confidence. I’ve been spending time learning about products and new techniques lately and I’m finding that the internet is making it easy! YouTube is awesome for tutorials and recommendations while beauty blogs are great for product reviews. :)

Here’s what I have learned recently:

// apply blush up near the hairline, just below the temple, and stop before reaching the apple of the cheek

// I have “hooded eyes” which means I have to apply eye shadow differently (still figuring it out because tutorials contradict each other)

// concealer goes on after foundation – who knew?!

// pressed powder drastically reduces shine, whereas loose does not

// even though I have oily skin, I still need to wear moisturizer

// how to use a blending sponge

Some things I hope to learn soon:

// how to apply cream eye shadow in such a way that is flattering

// if primer is truly necessary, and if so, which I should buy

// how to contour

// if there is a pore minimizer that works for me and is affordable

// how to use an eye lash curler (major fear here, lol)

I’m watching:

Nikkia Joy – she has oily skin, too, so I’m learning a lot from her. I love that she starts her tutorial videos without any makeup on (keepin’ it real!) and her Australian accent is so fun. ^_^

I’m reading:

e.l.f. cosmetics blog

with wends

poisoned annie

currently, lately

New products I’m using (possible reviews to come):

Rimmel Stay Matte pressed powder

Neutrogena oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin

e.l.f. brow pencil – (already did a review, click here)

FLOWER lip suede

Maybelline Great Lash mascara

blending sponge

Revlon under eye concealer

Product(s) I’m craving:

NYX 6pack jumbo eye shadow pencil

EmaxDesign makeup brushes

And that’s where I’m at right now!  I’m having fun learning.

Do you love makeup?

Do you have any recommendations for me?

    1. Hmm, that’s what I heard so I tried it. I don’t know if it works for everyone but it turned out well for me. :) I am only using an under eye concealer, not sure if that makes a difference or not!

      1. I don’t know! I use a concealer stick from Neutrogena and it goes on pretty thick. It could work but I’d have to try it and see! I don’t usually wear make-up when I’m not going anywhere important, so maybe I’ll have to make an exception one day and give it a try one of these days!

    1. Oh, no! Well, that stinks. :/ I have some hormonal breakouts occasionally (following the d&c I had some acne show up) but so far I’m not having any issue using the moisturizer by Neutrogena.

    1. Very true! Haha, I want to try EVERYTHING but I don’t think my husband would appreciate it! :D But I know what you mean, and I’m definitely looking forward to trying new products that seem interesting.

    1. Lol, yeah really, there’s a lot to it, isn’t there?!
I don’t plan on getting all crazy into it (we can’t afford for me to, for one thing!!) but I do love learning and this is a fun topic to “study.” :)

  1. So glad you’re enjoying it! How much time does your get ready routine take in the morning now?
I used to use primer (I can’t remember what brand, but I got it at Macys, I think, from one of the counters). I don’t think it did much, honestly. I occasionally use foundation, but now I use mineral powder foundation. I’m trying to use less as I get older … but I have an uneven tone from years of acne as a kid. Let me know what you think of the primer!

    1. Oh, I don’t spend much time at all really. The only time it takes me more than five minutes to do my makeup is when I’m trying something new and still figuring it out, lol.
I love the idea of going to Macy’s and visiting the makeup counters but I fear I would feel pressured to spend too much money. :/ A new Sephora store opened up right next door to our Trader Joe’s and I want nothing more than to go in there but I’m scared I would spend all of our grocery $$, lol.
I’m sure I’ll try primer eventually, but right now I’m finding that using a nice moisturizer, foundation and pressed powder are working pretty well. :)

      1. Oh man, about 10 years ago (was it?!), my mom and I went to a makeup counter in Nordstroms (so fancy!), intending to just update some things we had. They did our faces up a bit and we picked out some things, but it didn’t seem too extravagant – but the bill was almost $1000!!!!! We hit the roof and put back almost everything. We expected it to be maybe $200, tops (which was still a ton of money). So yeah, grocery money goes FAST!
I agree with using a good moisturizer versus a primer.

  2. Oh my goodness! If you have any questions about makeup I would love to answer them!! I am obsessed with makeup and have tons of it haha. I’ve been practicing makeup for a few years now. I usually use more high end products but I am dipping my toes into drugstore currently!! Some of my favorites right now are — wet and wild concealer, Wet and wild face primer, nyx total control foundation, codi airspun loose face powder (to bake!), and Milani ‘luminoso’ blush!!! I just put up a new post too on how I do my eyebrows! If you have any questions or any requests for posts, please let me know!! :) love reading your posts daily

    1. That’s great! :) Yeah, I’m seeing a lot more about Wet N Wild lately which is crazy fun; I remember the brand from when I was a child being the cheap nail polish and that was it! lol Thanks :D

  3. Makeup is all trial and error. I have learned this myself, because I also have hooded and oily eyelids which used to make applying eyeshadow near enough impossible. it was my favourite part of makeup though so I didn’t want to skip it out so I started using a primer, and its changed my life. I can do any eyeshadow look I want now as long as I use and set a primer. My recommendations are Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Eden or I have recently discovered that Rimmel Magnifyes is a really good dupe. I also recommend Essence All About Matte Translucent Powder. Its only £4 and is white so it really brightens the under eyes. I hope this helps. If you want any more advice/tips I have a blog on here called FallenVirtue xxx

  4. Definetly use Urban Decay eyeshadow primer! I have oily eyelids and oily skin and this makes my eyeshadow stay on all day (and sometimes nights) long! I also use really good eyeshadows and that helps a lot!

  5. I didn’t know much about where makeup went till I started watching YouTube videos. I too have oily skin and didn’t know about moisturizer till last year. I use one from Elf, but I don’t use it daily, even though you’re “suppose” to.

  6. I loved reading this! I really want to explore more products too but am kind of avoiding it mainly because I’m in the late teenager years (I’m turning 17 next month) and I know that makeup isn’t the best for having clear skin. I wrote a post a couple months back on some of my favourite products which you may be interested in?… https://myblessingbygrace.com/2017/04/23/collective-haul/ . Hope you’re having a great day! xxx

  7. You’re doing a great job! I love that your blogging and documenting your journey. My one suggestion is to start here and buy this book. https://www.amazon.com/Bobbi-Brown-Makeup-Manual-Everyone/dp/0446581356/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1500342806&sr=1-1&keywords=bobbi+brown

It has everything you could possibly want to know. It has a step by step guide for everything along with step by step photos. I’ve been doing makeup for years and I still learn something every time I open this book.

    Good luck with everything!!
