Thoughts and Happenings 05/06/17

Elizabeth is walking!! She took her first unassisted steps on Thursday night and aww, it was so adorable! She walked to me – took five or six steps with no problem. :) At ten months old, she is our youngest to be walking; the other three were all twelve months. Perhaps she’s just trying to catch up with them. ;) Oh, and she’s getting two more teeth at the moment.

Have I mentioned that she is getting into everything? Our living room and dining room are becoming so sparse of décor, lol. Library books can no longer be on low shelves, baskets with Samuel’s toys had to be put in his bedroom instead of under the tables next to the entertainment center, furniture has had to be shifted to block electrical outlets… she has turned our living space upside down, lol. But what a sweetie, totally worth it!

This was at the zoo on Wednesday. We had a great time! Here’s Maggie’s take on it, if you want to see more pics of her and Joshua. :)

We went out yesterday morning for me to (sadly) return my amazing primer to Ulta. I also returned my new powder to WalMart; it was Rimmel’s Stay Matte pressed powder and I loved that stuff!! But as I am evaluating cosmetic ingredients, I am getting quite discouraged. It seems that there are VERY few laws and restrictions in place for personal care items and companies can call their products “natural,” “organic,” and “pure” for no good reason.  More on my research to come, but suffice it to say that things are not looking good and I am definitely not destined to be a beauty blogger. :/ Well, unless I become an advocate for natural beauty and healthy cosmetics…That’s a distinct possibility.

To close on a happier note, I made a new dinner this week. :) Instead of boiling water on the stove and making ravioli that way, I made a ravioli bake and it was really good! We all enjoyed it. I followed these directions.

Are there any new recipes you’ve tried and really liked lately?

  1. Yay Baby Elizabeth! 👏🏽 It’s so exciting to hear she’s walking. 🙂
It can be hard to find cosmetics with good ingredients. And then trying to find out which are cruelty free. Try Besame Cosmetics! They’re based in California and have a retro theme to their products. I believe they are natural.

  2. I absolutely looooove that she’s walking now! 😍 Everything she does is so cute, but I think this one tops them all! That new ravioli bake was really good; I’m looking forward to having that again :)

  3. I feel like my little guy is way behind when compared to Elizabeth. That’s ok since I’d probably lose my mind if I had to chase 2 around. Jacob is on the move, almost a crawl but really just using his arms to pull himself where he wants to be.😉 He definitely has to be watched when he’s “loose”. Lol!
    The ravioli bake looks good.

It is so upsetting to see what companies can sneak into products. Watching shows like How It’s Made has turned me away from some things. Like hot dogs. 😝
Labelling laws should be more strict. Sorry you are finding so many problems with products you liked. I meant to check my lotions for parables. Hopefully my kids will give me a break later to check out my products. I don’t want to risk cancer since that’s how my mom died, and my dad had a non cancerous tumor removed from his “breast” tissue when he was probably 30 something.

    1. Jacob is doing perfect! Elizabeth is so physically focused, much more so than her siblings were. They all advanced at a “normal” rate whereas I feel like she masters something and then immediately begins mastering the next thing. She JUST started using the push walker like a week ago and now it’s like she doesn’t even need it! O_O It’s exciting but also tiring because, as you said, I have to chase her around. She doesn’t understand to leave certain things alone (and I don’t go around hollering “no” at babies, lol) so there’s a lot of distracting and re-positioning going on. ;)
It is VERY upsetting what companies get away with. I have been so disturbed…I found out yesterday that even anti-bacterial wipes (Wet Ones) and sunscreen (Water Babies) have parabens in them. :(
Both my parents had skin cancer so I’m cautious and I have a healthy fear of the sun, but I had no idea that so many products were carcinogenic. :/

      1. The history of skin cancer is worth being extra cautious. We are all light skinned and burn easily. The 2 year old got a burn on his neck while wearing a hat and long sleeved shirt already this year. 😞 My husband can tan, but I am either red or white.😝

        1. Same here. I am super protective of my kids because of the family history and especially after learning that sun damage that happens during childhood increases the risk of future skin cancer by a fair amount. I remember having at least three serious burns as an older child/teen when my parents weren’t around to make me wear sunscreen. Now I regret those times. :/

          1. I have burnt to the blistering point a few times, and my brother fell asleep in the sun as a teen and needed his clothing cut off of him it was so bad.😞 I hope to avoid those serious burns with my kids. It’s hard enough to get boys to do the right thing when you’re right there, so hopefully they’ll be careful as they grow and are more independent. 😒

    1. We’re so excited! I love getting to see these milestones happen. :D
I’m finding that it’s only a little bit tricky finding parabens-free but it is extremely hard to find truly natural. :( There are a TON of other carcinogenic ingredients in our products. http://www.safecosmetics.org/ It’s scary.

      1. Yeah, I know. I read a David Suzuki article about what is known as the Dirty Dozen. I was looking at the natural makeup on Well.ca and realized that many of those contained one of the dirty dozen. The CI-(5 number) codes are part of them and they seem to be everywhere. I was kind of bummed that there doesn’t seem to be an article on David Suzuki on brands that don’t contain the stuff. I tried a Google search too and wasn’t any luckier. Bleh…

        1. I feel like there isn’t really a solution either because where would natural products even come from? Etsy shops/small businesses sell all natural things but where are they getting their supplies? From stores? Okay, then what is * their* source??? Know what I mean? :/ I’m losing faith here…

    1. Thanks. :) Yeah, she is just so focused on doing physical things, it’s crazy! Nothing like our other children who seemed to advance at a “normal” rate. I always heard about babies doing things early, but my children always went by the book…until now. lol
Does your little guy cruise? I love seeing babies do that, I don’t know why, it’s just so cute!!

  4. Way to go Elizabeth!!! I’m so happy for you guys! It’s great to have a mobile baby, even if it’s worth more work to keep her out of things. I’m going through the same thing will my baby, even though she’s been walking for 6m now – she is, as my dad said, a “hellion.” !!!!
That ravioli!!!!!!!! I want that! I think I will do that for my girls – they should love it! Thanks for posting it.
Also, have you looked into any mineral-based powder makeup? I don’t know if all of them are paraben-free or what their safety factor is, but I know they’re at least a little better.

    1. Thanks 😊 We’re all so smitten with her, everything she does is applause-worthy, lol.
Yeah, Elizabeth is a bit of a hellion, too! Hahaha
I have looked at some mineral-based and, while I don’t see in then, I do see a lot of really long chemical names. :/ So, I’m still investigating.

  5. She ha such a sweet little face! Little O is not walking yet but is also in everything. I have to admit that sometimes I let him tear up the house just because I can get away with drinking a cup of coffee while he does it!
